What is functional medicine and how does it differ from traditional healthcare?
Functional medicine is a personalized, whole-body approach to improving your health.
Instead of asking “What medication matches this symptom?” it asks “Why is this happening?”
In functional medicine, we look at how systems in the body interact, including gut health, hormones, metabolism, and the nervous system. We also use your health history, diet, and lifestyle patterns, and advanced lab testing to understand what is driving your symptoms.
From there, we design a personalized plan using nutrition, lifestyle, and targeted supplementation. This restores balance and improves how the body functions as a whole, improving symptoms naturally.
Traditional healthcare is great for emergency care and diagnosing disease, but it’s often reactive and symptom-focused. Functional medicine is proactive. It helps you uncover what is going on in your body, so you can feel better and actually improve your long-term health.
Functional medicine often focuses on “root causes.” What does that really mean?
Root causes are the reasons why a symptom is happening. Weight gain and low energy, for example, may stem from blood sugar instability, nutrient deficiencies, hormone imbalances, inflammation, or an overtaxed nervous system.
Bloating is often caused by gut bacteria imbalances, gut inflammation, yeast overgrowth, low digestive enzyme production, or low stomach acid.
Instead of covering symptoms with medications, functional medicine identifies the root causes and addresses those directly. When you correct the root causes, symptoms often improve or resolve as a natural byproduct.
How does functional medicine connect lifestyle factors like nutrition, sleep, and stress to overall health?
Lifestyle factors are the foundation of health. Nutrition impacts blood sugar, inflammation, and hormone production. Sleep regulates cortisol, metabolism, and recovery. Stress affects everything from digestion to detoxification to immune function. Functional medicine looks at how these inputs influence your biology on a daily basis. Small, consistent lifestyle habits can significantly shift your biology and improve how the body functions over time.
What types of health concerns are most often addressed through functional medicine?
Functional medicine is commonly used for chronic symptoms that haven’t improved with other approaches, or when someone has been told “everything looks normal” but still doesn’t feel well.
This can include:
• Digestive issues (bloating, constipation, IBS-like symptoms)
• Hormonal issues (PMS, irregular cycles, PCOS, fertility challenges, menopausal symptoms, pregnancy symptoms, postpartum symptoms)
• Fatigue
• Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
• Mood swings
• Poor sleep quality
• Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
• Skin conditions like acne
Most people aren’t dealing with just one symptom, but a combination of symptoms that have stacked up over time.
Why has functional medicine gained so much attention in communities like Mueller that are health-conscious?
Mueller is home to many people who care deeply about their health, their families, and the future of Austin. There’s a strong emphasis on growth, connection, and doing things well. That mindset shows up in their healthcare, too. People are no longer satisfied with quick fixes or medications that cover their symptoms. They want to understand their body, actually improve their health, and feel their best long-term. Functional medicine is an approach that aligns beautifully with those priorities.
What surprises people most when they first experience a functional medicine approach?
Many people are surprised by how thorough it is. They are used to short, frustrating doctor’s visits that leave them with more questions than answers. Functional medicine feels different right away. There’s time to actually understand what is going on, and symptoms that once felt random start to make sense. For many clients, reviewing their lab work is a huge turning point. Instead of being told everything is “normal,” they finally see what’s been driving how they feel. Some clients even get emotional in that moment. Not because something is wrong, but because for the first time they have answers and hope.
Why do so many people say functional medicine helps them feel truly heard for the first time?
Time and attention are built into the functional medicine process. Instead of a rushed appointment focused on one symptom, functional medicine takes the time to paint the full picture for the client. Clients are able to share their experiences, ask questions, and feel confident that their concerns are being taken seriously. They get to partner with their practitioner and be active participants in their health. That alone can be powerful, but when paired with a clear plan to move forward, it ultimately drives lasting change.
Taylor Stolt is a Mueller resident and the founder of Plate and Canvas, a functional medicine practice serving clients nationwide. She and her team use advanced lab testing and a root-cause approach to create practical protocols that support natural healing. They have helped over 800 clients feel like themselves again without restrictive diets or extremes.
